Turchi ed Europa: Famagosta, 1571 Il 2 agosto 1571 la guarnigione veneziana di Famagosta, ultimo presidio cristiano a Cipro, era costretta ad arrendendersi. Sotto il comando di Marcantonio Bragadin, la fortezza aveva resistito in modo straordinario per ben dieci mesi. I veneziani avevano dato prova di eccezionale valore nella speranza del soccorso della flotta della Serenissima. I seimila cristiani tennero testa a centomila musulmani. Infine, stremati, i veneziani accettarono le offerte di resa onorevole proposte dal capo dell'esercito ottomano. Il Pascià, però, non mantenne i patti: ogni violenza venne concessa e a Bragadin fu riservata una terribile sorte. L'aiuto dal mondo cristiano giunse solo ad inizio ottobre quando le due flotte si scontrarono nelle acque di Lepanto. Turks and Europe: Famagosta, 1571 On 2 August 1571 the Venetian garrison in Famagosta, the last Christian defence in Cyprus, was obliged to surrender. Under the command of Marcantonio Bragadin, the fortress had extraordinarily resisted for ten months. Venetians showed an exceptional bravery hoping in the rescue of the fleet of the Serenissima. Six Thousand Christians made head against one hundred thousand Muslims. In the end, exhausted, Venetians accepted the honorable surrounder offering that the head of the Ottoman army proposed. The Pasha, however, did not keep the agreement: any violence was allowed and a terrible destiny was reserved to Bragadin. The help from the Christian world arrived just at the beginning of October when the two fleets clashed off the coast of Lepanto.
