Middle Ages: Gregory the great and the evangelization of Europe
Gregory (540-604) is one of the great fathers of Europe: he was Pope (590-604) in very difficult years, but with him the Church finds the suitable guide for the grave circumstances, the careful shepherd that has to manage the Byzantine cesaro-papismo and the Longobard danger; he is the great author of northern peoples evangelization.
With Gregory, who fully deserves the title of «The Great», West Europe, now given up by the influence of Costantinople, finds its strength in the centrality of the bishop of Rome.
