10th - 11th century: Gregory VII, the reformation and the investiture controversy
Ildebrando of Soana became Pope, as Gregory VII°, in the year 1073. He was an important reformer and exerted himself on the so-called «investiture controversy» the first of the great arguments that opposed the two powers: the Church and the Empire.
