Stato Liberale: Pio X e il modernismo Non è stato facile definire il modernismo per la grande varietà di forme e di adattamenti che esso assume. In sintesi si può dire che il modernismo ripropone all'interno della Cattolicità, in modo più o meno nascosto, la lezione e gli orientamenti del protestantesimo. Il modernismo costituisce la grande prova della Chiesa contemporanea. Come tale fu compresa in tutta la sua drammaticità all'inizio del XX secolo; non così avvenne, però, quando le stesse tendenze riemersero turbinosamente nella seconda metà del secolo determinando una vertiginosa sostituzione dell'evento cristiano con una triste intellettualizzazione della fede. Pius X and the modernism It has been not easy to define modernism because of the great variety of shape and adjustments it takes. Summarizing we can say that in the Catholicity, in a more or less hidden way, modernism presents the lesson and the tendencies of Protestantism again. The modernism is the great trial of the contemporary Church. Its dramatic nature was understood at the beginning of XX century; but it was not the same when in the second half of the century the same tendencies stormily came out again determining a vertiginous replacement of the Christian event with a sad intellectualization of faith.
