Nascita di Gesù: Betlemme e il censimento
"In quei giorni un decreto di Cesare Augusto ordinò che si facesse il censimento di tutta la terra. Questo primo censimento fu fatto quando era governatore della Siria Quirinio. Andavano tutti a farsi registrare, ciascuno nella sua città. Anche Giuseppe, che era della casa e della famiglia di Davide, dalla città di Nazaret e dalla Galilea salì in Giudea alla città di Davide, chiamata Betlemme, per farsi registrare insieme con Maria sua sposa, che era incinta. Ora, mentre si trovavano in quel luogo, si compirono per lei i giorni del parto. Diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, lo avvolse in fasce e lo depose in una mangiatoia, perché non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo" (vangelo di Luca, cap. 2,1-7).

"In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that the whole world should be enrolled. This was the first enrollment, when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all went to be enrolled, each to his own town. And Joseph too went up from Galilee from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." (Gospel according to Luke, chap. 2,1-1)
