Occident: Rodney Stark, «The Victory of Reason» What lies beneath the pre-eminence of the West all over the world? Without a strong commitment to reason, today the entire world would be about where non-European societies were in 1800: a world with many astrologists, alchemists but no scientists. A world of desposts, lacking universities, banks, eyeglasses, chimneys. This commitment to reason has a direct reference to Christianity.
